Training the Archive – Interview: Nick Couldry & Ulises Mejias 'Data Colonialism'

Gemeinsam haben Ulises Mejias und Nick Couldry das Buch „The Costs of Connection. How Data is Colonizing Human Life and Appropriating it for Capitalism“ verfasst, das 2019 bei Stanford University Press erschien. Die Autoren diskutieren Daten als Abstraktion des Lebens und beschreiben, wie Daten extrahiert und kolonial ausgebeutet werden.

Ulises Mejias ist Professor für Kommunikationswissenschaften und Direktor des Institute of Global Engagement an der State University of New York in Oswego. Zu seinen Forschungsinteressen gehören neben einer kritischen Datenforschung, Philosophie und Soziologie der Technologie sowie die politische Ökonomie digitaler Medien.
Nick Couldry ist Professor für Medienkommunikation und Gesellschaftstheorie an der London School of Economics and Political Science und seit 2017 Fakultätsmitglied am Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society in Harvard. Seine Forschungsinteressen umfassen Medien und Kommunikation, Kultur und Macht sowie Gesellschaftstheorie und die Folgen der Konzentration symbolischer Macht in bestimmten Institutionen im Alltag.

Training the Archive untersucht die Anwendbarkeit Künstlicher Intelligenz auf Kunst und das Kuratieren von Kunst. Dies ist eine Reihe von Interviews, welche Training the Archive, ein Gemeinschaftsprojekt des Ludwig Forum Aachen und des HMKV Hartware MedienKunstVerein, Dortmund in Kooperation mit der RWTH Aachen begleiten. Für die Interviews werden Künstler*innen, Kurator*innen und Theoretiker*innen befragt, die in den vergangenen Jahren wesentliche Beiträge zum Forschungsfeld der Bildproduktion und Künstlicher Intelligenz geleistet haben.

Ulises Mejias is a professor of communication studies and director of the Institute of Global Engagement at the State University of New York at Oswego. His research interests include critical data studies, philosophy and sociology of technology and political economy of digital media.
Nick Couldry is professor of media communications and social theory at the London School of Economics and Political Science and from 2017 has been a faculty associate at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society. His research interests includes media and communications, culture and power and social theory and the consequences for everyday reality of symbolic powers concentration in particular institutions.

Training the Archive explores the applicability of artificial intelligence to art and the curation of art. This is a series of interviews accompanying Training the Archive, a joint project of Ludwig Forum Aachen and Hartware MedienKunstVerein Dortmund in cooperation with RWTH Aachen University. The interviews feature artists, curators and theorists who have made significant contributions to the research field of image production and artificial intelligence in recent years.
