Focusing on a belt instead of acquiring the skill is crazy work

Khabib and Islam are sambo champions and have been grappling their entire lives at the highest levels. Even tho it isn’t SPECIFICALLY jiu jitsu, it doesn’t mean guys like Poirier aren’t black belt level

Exactly you can just be White belt for years but your skill is more than actual Black belt

The fact that Islam beat Moicano doesnt mean that Moicano is not black belt level, Islam is the best grappler in the UFC maybe tied with Chimaev, if losing to him in a cage proves that you are not black belt than nobody would have a black belt on the planet at his weightclass. Islam is black belt level too he just doesnt do BJJ specificaly, he does mma grappling and did Combat Sambo you dont get belts in that.

Belal has good grappling but he cannot submit anyone to save his life

Belts are just a piece of fabric. Skill is everything .

People think all black belts are equal and try to compare them. Everyone's skills are different. One black belt might beat another it doesn't mean he shouldn't be a black belt

I don’t understand this confusion, a black belt does not mean you’re the best in the world. So when you go with the best in the world (Khabib, Islam) of course they are going to tap an average black belt.

Tbh i think its more common in BJJ to sandbag then to promote students early

It's really all about effective grappling at the end of the day, whether you got your technique from pure BJJ or elsewhere

The belt mainly is a source of technical knowledge and time in the art. It can also display your effectiveness (in grappling, NOT a fight) but that's not always the case

I think there’s a lot of bjj practitioners who have issues dealing with high level wrestling. Wrestlers bring an intensity and pressure that they are not used to.

I've been a brown belt for 12 yrs. I've never made a peep about it. Pacific Top Team in Canada. We all work and nobody even talks belts in our gym. So I've happily been in this position for 12 yrs lol 😂 Is what it is

I like the belt system, but only if it’s legitimately stuck to. I want my blue belt when I’m actually at the blue belt level, not a class sooner.

Anyone who thinks poirier isn’t a high level grappling should go roll with him

The black belt is a material construct, a symbol of an illusory technical mastery — but ultimately, it is a human invention. True knowledge is immaterial; it has no end. It is a lifelong study that you carry in your heart as a warrior, not tied to a black belt around your waist.

I've been a white belt for 5 years, but I did judo for 6 years first and I never get promoted because I just train no gi. One gym was going to promote me to blue belt because I would tap purples there but I left, and that was 4 years ago 😂
