Показать описание
Diabetes has been uncommon in children in PNG and Pacific Island countries, but cases are increasing throughout the world. Studies in Africa suggest that the incidence of diabetes in children is similar in all countries, it is just less recognised in tropical countries where children’s deaths during first-presentation diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) are attributed to sepsis or malaria. Paediatricians and paediatric nurses need to be able to suspect and diagnose diabetes, and know how to manage DKA, and how to help children with chronic care needs, including insulin supplies, diabetes education, what to do on sick days, and writing a personalised management plan. We will go through the acute and long-term management of type 1 diabetes and its complications in this session.
