Food and fuel prices investigated to see if shoppers pay too much

The competition watchdog is set to investigate whether "any failure in competition" is leaving consumers paying higher grocery and fuel prices than they should be.

In an effort to "get to the heart of the issues", the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) will conduct "formal interviews" with the senior management of supermarkets.

I know someone works at tesco the club card price when scanned to get reduced price at the checkout should be the origional price to begin with so they're tricking people to think they're getting a bargain

Go back to the start of Covid when the BBC put a Sainsbury Director on air whose comment kicked off the panic buying. Profiteering at its most despicable.

Just look at the changing prices on your shopping receipt. That's proof enough.

This is the new normal. Profits through the roof for all involved.
I pity families doing a weekly shop right now.

There used to be council staff that checked prices, but they have all gone. Leaving stores to gouge customers, left right and centre!

As they put up profit margins on fuel in 2022 and deliberately refuse to cut costs when wholesale prices fall then I think it’s a resounding YES

And that’s all that will happen. Headlines!!

Unleaded petrol (at the same supermarket brand) in Hull is 5p a litre more expensive that in Doncaster, 40 mines away. No excuse for that.

Yes, shops are having one inflated price on the shelves, then they charging 20% extra at the till too, then say we are getting around to changing shelf prices, but don't. I'm sure I just read an article of Sunak saying he wants prices to increase due to farmers not being able to find workers and unpicked food going to waste. Gov't is enjoying the extra VAT this is bringing.

"They will not be able to get away with using inflation as an excuse for profiteering" They already have 😂

Nothing to do with QE, zero interest rates and excessive government borrowing causing an increase in prices. Thanks Sky for the pisspoor economics lesson.

Increased energy prices increases the price of many items. The blind stampede to net zero exasperates the situation.

The Tories need to make this make sense, food isn't just expensive but it is unregulated. Expensive food is making us ill. Everyone I know is having stomach problems and women are having issues with their cycle too. If they want us working to 68 years old and paying more taxes we need affordable healthy food, good NHS and dental service. Get these things right, will could deal with working harder, longer and for less. That should be the natural trade off.

Supermarkets making to much money. . no never .. sainsburys profits down to 69 million from 72 million. Nothing to do with people buying less because money not there.

The supermarkets make 10p a litre profit... That seems reasonable and honestly not a great deal of money for them.... How much does the government make in tax per barrel of oil?

I haven’t shopped at a supermarket in ten years. I only shop locally and concentrate on farm markets or buy from independent stores. The food and products are of a much higher quality and the store owners pay the correct tax to the HMRC which goes back into the pot that benefits us all. The supermarkets all bank off shore in corrupt places l like Gibraltar and pay minimal tax in the UK.

Look at the profits oil companies made and yet prices are still "because of war in Ukraine". Give me a break 🙄
