The consigning owner acquired it privately; and before that, it was owned by the same player for many decades. We cannot find a record of it having been on the open market in the modern era. The voice is everything anyone in search of a pre-war Martin 000-28 would hope to discover. It's got a beautiful darkness about it, with very lively and complex overtones in each register. The bass is powerful and focused; the midrange is robust, dry and present; and the high end contains a silky roundness that really comes to life under a flatpick. Man, I have a modern 000-18e retro, and it sounds as good as any guitar I've ever played. Doesn't ring like my D28 and it's more quiet of course, but for recording, it's my go to. The tone is even and incredible across the strings, and it plays like a dream.
