That kid did NOT look at the sword the same when it was handed back to him...he gave it a look of confidence

Life has been tough, and I replay Aragorn’s quote in my mind all the time.

“There is always hope.”

Although I have watched again and again the two towers since I was six, I have only recently understood the significance of this scene. Aragorn has just had a fight with Legolas, he is sad and dejected, and by chance he meets a bewildered boy. Aragorn realizes that the boy is about to despair, and he asks him for the sword. Now: the boy's sword is ugly, damaged and chipped. He knows very well that it is not a good weapon. It’s fucking bad indeed. But at that moment he realizes that if he gives up, others around him will do so. It's a good sword, eventually he says. But he’s kinda lying: it is simply not true. Yet here is aragorn: even in the most desperate situation ever, you have to convince yourself there’s always hope. It’s the only thing you can do, otherwise you have no chance at all.

It was Viggo's idea to do this scene

I’m listening to the fellowship of the ring and just realized Aragorn puts his hand on frodos shoulder and says the same thing he does in this scene.

Best trilogy ever. The new ones were never as good. The books are amazing

I like to think Haleth survived and helped Erkenbrand repair Helm’s Deep after the battle. His father would be proud of him. Poor kid. He’s carrying a weight most men twice his age would buckle under.

Viggo's son is in this scene. Wearing the helmet next to the brazier.

The beautiful thing is that "Hope" is the name Aragorn's mother gave him when she brought him to Rivendell.

It's not about what or how the sword looks like... it's how you use it.

Children having to fight as soldiers will always break my heart. I think of all the times in history where boys had to go to war, because their fathers and older brothers are gone.

:( Hamas son already is having to bear his fathers name and legacy and yet still respects Aragorn already by addressing him as my Lord and how Aragorn attempts to instill bravery and leadership to the son...

Fact: This boy is son of commander of Theoden's royal guard, the one who died when scout of wargs attacked them

This scene reminds me of the “Riddle of Steel” from the film “Conan the Barbarian”

Conan’s father thought the Riddle was about the sword itself

Thulsa Doom thought the Riddle was about the power of flesh over steel

Conan is the one who realizes that the Riddle was neither about sword nor flesh, but will power.

The boy’s sword may be brittle. And the boy himself may be small. But the boy has the courage and will to fight and defend the keep.

Common people, this is the same sword he throws down in the scene where he argues with Legolas... Aargorn knows the sword is not good but gives courage to the boy in saying it is good.
