My theory is that this series is trying to give a message about the meaningless cycle of consumerism. In both episodes, the protagonist starts with a negative emotion - in episode one, he appears to be angry, and in episode two, he is sad. Both times, the painting on the wall tells him to interact with a strange new object. The painting is media - telling him that if he just buys this thing, his pain will go away. Both times, he is momentarily satisfied just by the novelty of the new thing. In the real world, it is tempting to cope with negative emotion by buying new things just to buy them, and experience the excitement of something new. However, things that are new cannot stay new forever - that isn’t what newness is. Everything eventually gets old, and simply becomes meaningless junk that clutters up your living space. We see the cat/ball thing still on the wall from last episode in this episode, existing there only as a useless callback. I theorize that as the series goes on, items will simply continue to accrue near that wall, perhaps to the point where the entire wall is covered.
