Canção da tradição popular grega (de autoria desconhecida) que homenageia os kléftes (literalmente, "ladrões"), como ficaram conhecidos os insurgentes que lutaram nas regiões montanhosas pela independência da Grécia do império Otomano, na vitoriosa guerra de 1821.
Eram os descendentes de gregos das cidades e do interior que se refugiaram nas montanhas desde o séc. XV para escaparem à dominação turca, convertendo-se em bandoleiros em guerrilha permanente contra os invasores.

This is a song from the Greek folk tradition (of unknown authorship) that celebrates the lives of the klephts (literally, 'thieves'), as were known the insurgents who lived and fought in the mountains for the independence of Greece from the Ottoman Empire in the victorious war of 1821.
They were the descendants of Greeks from the cities and the countryside who had taken refuge in the mountains since the 15th century to escape Turkish rule, becoming brigands and waging a permanent guerrilla war against the invaders.
