I own a non-TMSS unit. One of the things that made a huge difference with the video and sound quality was completely recapping the system, replacing the old and tired original Taiwanese or Chinese caps with good quality Japanese caps.

Don't forget to recap the 1602 power supply while you're at it.

The sound chip wasn't replaced it just changed, changed to be incorporated inside a custom ASIC instead of a discrete DIP package reducing cost and changing audio mixing circuit.

No later model ones that still have the High Def sign has the TMSS, The last revision of the non-High Def Model 1 was basically the model 2 inside the model 1 shell since they used a cheaper sound chip to cut cost, That why the sound is so crappy. you must have gotten the last wave of model ones before the transition to the model two.

The 1/2 you speak of is refered to as VA7. VA7 is not a low-end Gene, it's got the best video of any Model 1 genesis. Problem is it's sound chip is HORRIBLE, BUT, it can be fixed with a $30 mod and some EE work.

All the High Def are non TMSS? Because the difference on the sound is VERY much. The non High Def is like the model 2 (or a little better), but they are all crappy on the sound (and in some games the graphics)

It doesn’t matter I have both version of model one. And both are s-video mods and I can’t tell. Someone is trying to sell a non-tmms one on eBay for $400 lol 🤣 stupid
