Laser tattoo removal with the 1064 wavelength machine (Q switched ND YAG machine) was useful, but never great. Problems with this technology include the following: pain with the procedure, incomplete tattoo removal, difficulty removing certain ink colors and an excessive number of procedures (sometimes over 20) to completely remove ink. The laser tattoo removal process literally took years.

Cynosure developed the Picosure laser which revolutionized laser tattoo removal. The Picosure is an ultrafast laser (pulse much shorter and more powerful than the old technology).
