Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has said that an Taoiseach Enda Kenny has a decision to make whether to back domestic water charges or the Irish people.
Ms Boylan’s comments come after confirmation was received that Ireland could still make use of the derogation on water charges and that the Commission source that said otherwise was not speaking in an official capacity.
The Dublin MEP said:
“The European Commission has now confirmed that, contrary to what was reported in the media in previous weeks, no European Commission Spokesperson made an official statement regarding the Water Framework Directive and Ireland in any regard.
“Whoever has been briefing Irish media has therefore been acting in an unofficial capacity. This is clear indication of political interference from within the European Commission.
