Cristo and political commentator Matthew Torbitt break down the implications of Labour’s plan to impose VAT on private school fees.

Private schools do not have to charge VAT on their fees because of a legal exemption for organisations providing education.

But the Labour Party manifesto pledges to end this exemption - although it will not remove their charitable status.

Zero rated VAT is applicable to many things which are not charity. I believe food and children's clothing are two examples of non-charity items. You do not have to be a charity to qualify.

Public school is subsidised by tax payers, higher income tax payers pay the majority of tax revenue.

So now higher income earners should not only pay the private school fees after already taxed money only out of love for their children, but now they should get taxed twice over? When they already pay triple the taxes of basic tax payers and get even less government benefits

Oh, but it's fine for churches to be tax exempt charities is it? Isn't the Catholic Church the wealthiest institution on the planet? Schools should get the chance to hoard their filthy lucre - and maybe even get a heated indoor swimming pool - which we never had at my independent prep school 40 years ago

Ok but Labour should also tax universities, tuition schools and any other education institution that charges fees and is VAT exempt. Cannot just tax private schools in isolation.

I went to one of the oldest private schools in the UK. I was shocked when I heard that they applied for lottery grants. I have sent my kids to good state schools as private schools are totally overrated. I welcome this!

Or we could focus on the real issues, school closures and immigration. We need a massive investment in more schools, teachers and to bring class sizes down. Which won't happen under Labour. Another 2 years wasted and yes that's how long Labour lasts in power. They'll be worse than the Tories.

Argue for private schools without making the case for funding public schools properly.

Starmer’s last two years of education was paid by a private school charity.

What about taxing mosques where the young are indoctrinated

I hope the rest of Labour’s policies are better thought through than this one.
There’s no VAT on university education, which is optional, but they want to add VAT to school fees where education is mandatory to the age of 16.

Whichever Party gets in needs to be brave enough to raise income tax to pay for improving state education.

The private system encourages free thinkers. This could be dangerous for the future, and potentially get in the way for governments. They want these kids dropped into an already depleted system, to become indoctrinated with their propaganda. Joining the treadmill.

Where will the 200K pupils go to be educated if this happens - can the tax payer pay the cost for more buildings and more teachers to be paid. Private school teachers will probably not go into the state sector - they won’t tolerate the crowd control aspect of state education.

Why do parents buy a private education for their children? Is it a selfless gesture to help the public sector provide more places and resources to the populace? Of course not. It is because they know that having a private education will give their children an advantage over their peers whose parents cannot (or, in some cases, choose not to) afford a private education. It's not merely a product of quality of instruction or class size either: in addition to being educational institutions, private schools are, inevitably, social institutions, and they function as exclusive social clubs for children from affluent families. When you buy a private education for your child, you also receive as an added bonus a ready-made network of influential connections that will benefit that child for the rest of her or his life. They will form strong bonds with peers who will one day inherit wealth, property, businesses, political legacies and social standing that others outside their school will have to fight very hard to gain. A private education is therefore an extremely valuable and, understandably, an extremely costly product. A private education is an unfair advantage that you can, provided you have the means, purchase for your child. I frankly struggle to understand how anyone justifies giving people a tax break to purchase such a product.
