In case anybody's wondering, power at the wheel as measured on a dyno is about the same as a stock Harley M8 114. Both are around 82 HP. The R18 is around 103 TQ, the M8 114 is around 107 TQ. Both have flat torque curves and similar redlines. The M8 107 is slightly lower at 80 HP and 98 TQ, also with a flat torque curve and a redline a little over 5000 RPM. In terms of displacement, the R18 sits right in between the 107 and the 114, so it makes sense that it also sits between them in torque.

It is impractical to test power at the crank outside the factory. Manufacturers tend to promote numbers at the crank, because it's easy for them to obtain, and because it will always be a higher number, usually by 10 to 15 percent. Harley owners tend to use dyno/wheel numbers, for two reasons. One is that Harley doesn't even tell you horsepower, only torque. But also, it is extremely common for American Harley owners to extensively upgrade their engines, and when you do so, it is preferable to get before and after dyno numbers. A good Stage II can take you to 115 HP and 125 TQ or beyond. By "good", I mean using an aftermarket cam and tune. A good Stage IV can achieve 150 HP or even more. Any Harley owner who cares about performance will probably do at least a Stage I, and if you don't care about performance, you won't be going online swapping HP and TQ numbers. I say all this to point out that the concept of readily available and very meaningful stage upgrades will keep some Harley owners from switching. For example, I own a Heritage 114. If I had left it stock, I would be open to potentially switching to BMW, but instead, my bike has a Stage II upgrade. I'd be giving up 30 horsepower and 25 TQ to switch to the BMW, and, again, that is quite common at least in America.

Fabulous! I just love the different styles you can get from this bike. I can’t wait to get on one again. Now why do I keep thinking about selling my Harley...?

Lucky enough to have ridden one. Nice to see some of the luggage and extras. Wish there had been more of that and less of the trendies.

I had the opportunity to sit on a R18 (First Edition) and switch on the ignition. Man-O-Man, Boy Oh Boy I never felt such power before. R18 is a piece of ART.

P.S - The Video 🎥 Is Simply Awesome, just reminded the good old days before the dreadful March 2020

I can stare at that Engine for hours.. Days.. Weeks... Months... Seems more like a tribute to the era when Horizontal Opposed engines were used on all aircraft

Beautiful BMW. I’ve read dozens of blogs about Harley Davidson motorcycles being outdated, the reason behind their financial problems. This BMW is proof, the bloggers are all wrong. Why would BMW be following Harley if their model is so outdated? Also, I have to say, You guys should consider yourselves fortunate to be able to enjoy a trip and ride bikes together. Many people suffering in the world.

Not trying to make things political, but I would genuinely love to see Indian/Asian versions of these stories too. Maybe on the G310s, or something bigger. But would definitely love to see BMWs in Indian stories. Please make it happen! :)

All the videos about the bagger and zero time on the actual saddlebags. For Pete’s sake open up the bag! How big are they? Is there an internal liner? Does it need a rain cover and if so is it included!

I 've ridden BMW's all my life and I love the brand, but that is not a BMW!
That is a thing wanting to be a Harley-Davidson.
If BMW aims to take over that market with the R18, they urgently have to work on the image of the bike.
It is simple: would a Hells Angel choose the R18 over any HD?
'Nuff said?
Stay Safe... Ed.
