The Kinks were an English rock band formed in London in 1963 by brothers Ray and Dave Davies. They are regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of the 1960s. The Kinks' music drew from a wide range of influences, including American R&B and rock and roll initially and later adopting British music hall, folk, and country. The band gained a reputation for reflecting English culture and lifestyle, fuelled by Ray Davies' wittily observational writing style. The Kinks and the songs of Ray Davies are now rightfully established as a great British institution. From the opening riff of You Really Got Me, The Kinks’ influence as pioneers in heavy metal, power pop, conceptual albums, and theatrical shows can be detected in much modern music.

This music was so exotic to me as a kid from the suburbs of Australia, very camp and fey, totally at odds with the whole macho down to earthness that was inflicted on me with pub rock and hard rock culture, that's why I loved The Kinks so much, I could drift away with their beautiful and often funny songs.

The instrumental sections are so dark in this song. Many here seem to find the song relaxing, but to my ears, it all feels like a desperate escape from the chaos and pain of modern existence. The harpsichord mimicking devilish gears whirring in one's mind, as if the city's (and perhaps the narrators?) darkness hasn't truly been abandoned. Masterpiece :)

Song is about closing eyes, being in denial, blocking out all problems and letting things happen; rather than engaging, putting head in sand. Ray Davies genius is so eloquent, he writes the music to say his words here.
