DS9 learned from the early mistakes of TNG and handled its characters in a satisfying way right out of the gate.

The best part is the character development only gets exponentially better every season. Everyone ends up in a very different place than they started, and it's all a natural progression.

The real glory of DS9 is that beyond the main cast development, most of the secondary characters get real arcs too. Nog, Rom, Jake, Dukat, Kai Winn, Garak and more. Even the notable misses like Keiko weren't because the writers forgot or didn't want to, in her case she felt she had to take her shot with several opportunities that would have meant she was lost to the show.
Most recurring characters change and advance during and between appearances and the changes matter. That's incredible for a Trek show.

Theres a reason why its the best trek show. Ever.

When you all finish DS9 (whenever that may be) you should definitely watch the documentary What We Left Behind. It explores so much of how this show came to be, the character development process, and how it learned to be a totally different kind of Star Trek than what was done before (and even since).

The character development truly is on par with Breaking Bad, The Wire, etc shows of modern day.

You can thank Ira Steven Behr for that. He led the writer's room for DS9

DS9 had a lot of competition with TNG. The writers really leaned into what fans wanted in a trek series.

And not to forget "Duet". Huge character development for Kira.

Going through a first time watch of DS9 sequentially and was really surprised how often Sisko is either not in an episode or only in a single scene. It makes the protagonist feel larger than life, you can feel his presence even when he's not on screen but like the biblical figure the show is building him up to be he exists on the sidelines often.

I guess what I'm saying is DS9 succeeds TNG as a show that truly feels like an ensemble cast and not just Picard and Friends.

Every character gets there moment, even ones that seem minor at first will have an episode or 2 later on and i LOVE IT

DS9, great writing, great cast, great show. Garak was my favorite character.🖖❤️

I really appreciated how they blocked out an episode or two a season to star a specific main cast member, so that nobody got left behind as unimportant and they all got to show off what made them tick in character and give the actor time to shine out of character. They even had episodes here and there carried almost entirely by tertiary cast members, and those were great too! Show's biggest strength, in my opinion.

DS9, for the most part, was very well written.

I can’t wait until you get to the later seasons, and we see such amazing development for characters who are, at this point, really minor.

I really want to see everyone take on Nog and Vic.

They even have episodes (spoilers!) that focus and develop side characters in surprising ways. The two best characters in the show aren't even in the main credits until the last season.

DS9 takes the A / B plot formula and generally dedicates one to a specific character’s They tried to give every minor character at least one focus episode, and the rest are major characters. Now once you hit mid-Season 3 the executives loosen their control. All of their focus went to voyager and they left DS9 to manage itself (which is when they toss out the restrictions on character development, long story arcs, and a lot of the normal Star trek rules Rick Berman insisted upon)

DS9 was peak Trek. Not only are the characters developed, the alien races (particularly the Cardassians and Ferengi) get more developed too.

DS9 is the only Trek series to make me tear up when I finished it. All the characters felt real to me because of their development.

I always thought DS9 had excellent writing. It's difficult keeping things fresh when most of your episodes take place at a space station instead of a ship that travels to new worlds every episode. This series made a lot of quality contributions to the lore.
