I learned about this before studying abroad in Japan for a year. Unfortunately my broke college student budget could only afford conveyor belt sushi, which of course does not have real wasabi.

So, I get to Japan, and we go out to eat soon afterward. My new acquaintance says, "Hey, try the guacamole!" Yea, right. :| In the first place, guacamole is Mexican cuisine. ... It was 'horse radish' wasabi imitation. I know an evil trap when I smell one.

The Japanese wasabi taste is suitable for instant food, and the Western wasabi for processed food.
Why? Western wasabi is much more suitable as a food additive because it tastes stronger.
