In Defence of DOGE

US debt hit $36 trillion—117% of GDP—and DOGE aims to cut $2 trillion from yearly spending. Madness or masterstroke? We’re here to argue why it could work. The 1993 cuts sparked a rare surplus—proof it’s doable. Yes, today’s economy leans hard on government spending (35% of GDP), and high interest rates sting, but America’s unique leverage might just hold. Watch to see why DOGE deserves a chance and what’s at stake.

Haven't watched the video yet but oh boy that title is going to cook up some nice beef.

So a more accurate and less click-bait-ey title would be “In Defense of the Concept of DOGE”

If only there was an office in the government in charge of accountability. They could perform audits and investigative assignments.
To be serious, it is malpractice that you didn't mention the GAO.

I reached the end and missed the part where DOGE was defended.

My theory is a program like this would work best if it were spread out over a decade, but that's impossible because the next election cancels the plan

It would be absolutely wonderful if we HAD years upon years to actually roll out these initiatives in reasonable, well-paced manners. But we don't. The United States operates in 2 and 4 year political cycles in which massive swings in policy can occur, and corruption and backdoor dealings run rampant. Once the next midterms occur, there is a very real chance Congress and the Senate will shift in such a way that the majority will be one who wants to prevent every single thing the President wants to accomplish, bad and good. We live in an age of spite, where both our political parties will burn the nation down to oppose the "other team".

Moderation and careful planning DO NOT WORK against determined opponents. Determined opponents can simply escalate, and escalate, and escalate again, until they run circles around you as you stew and seethe in your little, careful, moderate box.

I wonder about the soundness of the argument that government wages are justified because they generate income tax. If the wage is entirely funded by tax in the first place, then a proportion of tax on that money is not generating net profit.

Well again with Argentina, the last guy who tried to change the economy slowly was Macri, and that failed and led to Alberto, who failed, who led to Milei.

This is a global problem. We have lived through three decades of low interest rates, endless financial and real-estate bubbles, money printing, and debt creation so that every level of government is bloated and financially unsustainable. That is why the vast majority of governments worldwide depend upon deficit financing and the build up of debt. I'm Canadian and every level of government here is indebted and typically runs large deficits. That is why there are so many NGOs and why so many sectors of society that are completely dependent upon government funding. Humans badly need to relearn financial responsibility and restraint. If we don't there is going to be a financial crash that will dwarf the Great Depression. Personally, I think it is too late and what we are living through is the beginning of the end.

The video isn't even that positive on Doge but the mere suggestion that there might be something to say for it is enough for a 25% downvote rate by narrow minded people blinded by their disgust for a few individuals.

If our country was functioning as intended, nobody would care about Washington at all on a domestic level.

That end to me sounds like "Make sure to give the bureaucrats plenty of time to evade the process and weasel out of accountability."

That 11:52 statement... I can think of why some people would like to keep the IRS underfunded even if that ends up costing the government more money...

How are you convinced that when companies are invested in they reinvest it in their employees??

The problem with cutting back slowly is the process is controlled by the very thing you're trying to cut back, so it will never happen.

Videos like this are the reason why I unsubscribed. You didn’t argue in defense by playing devil’s advocate, you just waffled and made a whole bunch of assumptions of what DOGE is claiming to do, without actually analyzing what it has been doing or their goals- other than a short clip of Elon wanting to cut $2B. Title of the video should really be “In defense of austerity measures”.
