TELEPROMPTER: TIPS ON HOW TO USE ONE

Hi, this is Jay P. Morgan. Today on The Slanted Lens I'm sharing some tips I've learned from using a teleprompter almost constantly on set the last few months. I picked up an ikan teleprompter that has the quality I care most about- portability. What you choose will be different according to your needs, but there are some universal tips when it comes to using a teleprompter in your production. I've got them here, today on The Slanted Lens.

Keep those cameras rollin' and keep on clickin'.

Thanks for making this video. I know it's an older video but we're doing teleprompter work at my workplace and this is RIGHT ON TIME. Thanks for including the BTS of an actual shoot also; gave me a better idea of how to distance our subjects. We were shooting maybe 6 feet away and I could easily tell our talent was reading when I took it into post production. I'm going to change it up for the next attempt; see if we can get a better look from our shots. Again, thanks for making this video!

Would've been worth mentioning that it's best to have your talent stand at least 8ft or so away from the camera so that way it'll be harder to see their eyes moving left and right especially if a slightly bigger screen is used for the teleprompter.

Other than that, great tips. Learned a few more things today!

You always have perfect timing! Exactly what I needed today for a shoot. Thanks JP =D

The video's great. I just have a pet peeve with having models in the shot when they're not needed.
Give the model some lines, or act reading the teleprompter in the background. Don't diminish their worth having them stand or sit in frame. Bring them in shot when you're about to interact with them.

That woman is just standing in the background staring into space, throughout the whole video. Awkward.

I recently purchased a Neewer X17 Teleprompter. The unit is great. I just have to practice being more natural and less on the edge.

I shot my first video using a teleprompter today. The goal of the video is to be a summary of a real estate definition in under 2 minutes. I seriously underestimated how much work goes into properly formatting your script to flow freely and not sound like a robot.... let's just say I shot one video about 8 times over haha, but it was a lot of fun to see the progress as each video went on. Your 4th tip was something I came across with font size that wasn't right haha

Marvelous video, brother Morgan! But wondering why girl is standing there. Maybe she misbehaved and is being punished! 💛😎

Thanks for the advice on reading out aloud and marking the script for emphasis etc.

Great tips! I just realized I need to increase the font so I don’t look like I’m reading. Thank you!

🔴Thank you for the tips appreciate you taking the time and teaching us about that I’m looking to get a Teleprompter myself. What I was looking more towards like the iPad style but I’ll keep everything you said it might thank you so much.

Which are good tripods within budget to handle teleprompter?

He’s right about the importance of ease of setup. I just bought a Glidegear TMP 500. To be fair, at $250, it’s less than a third of the price of the this iKan ( _and_ I got it at a more than 50% off sale, so hard to resist). Still, it’s _really_ fiddly, and took me a lot longer to get set up than I’d expected. Also, the black fabric shielding on the iKan looks like it really is fabric, and so soft and easy to get s light seal with it. On the Glidegear, it’s more of a “plasticy” cloth material, and much harder to make bend around things. So, again, more time spend fiddling than I expected. Yes the iKan is expensive at around $800, but my time is. Only and it won’t take too many shoots before the iKan would have paid for itself. Sigh - maybe I’ll go get one.

Excellent, thank you, the girl did well in the background, responding to prompts, not a pun either.

Will a camera's autofocus work when using a teleprompter? In other words, does the glass impede the AF?

Great review Jay,
Teleprompters are game changers, especially presenting using Powerpoint, Keynote or Google Presentation slides as a software.
