The line-up of MAC Multimeters really hasn't changed in much 6 years. My local representative allowed me to use an EM823 for a week to try it out (my current meter, not a MAC is getting tired). The leads that come with it are too short, and there are no alligator clip attachments. My meter uses Fluke meter leads and they actually worked in the EM823, they are longer and can easily change between probes and clips. The first thing I noticed was with the leads not hooked to anything the reading jumped around allot when it should have been zero. Once I probed something it read accurately. The Amp scale is odd, where it has a position for microamps. It really is an extra digit I don't need, but I figured it out, I simply rounded the reading up one milliamp. But here was the biggest deal breaker for me, what resulted in me returning it. The meter has an auto shutoff which occurs after 20 minutes of inactivity or limited activity. To turn the meter back on, you have to turn the switch all the way off, then back on again to the desired position. This is impossible because you would have to remove the leads from the meter first before you can turn the switch. The meter has a detent system that rotates with the switch dial to make it idiot proof in terms of where to place thee leads for each test function. I found this out the hard way, in the middle of a Battery draw test. My old meter which also has an auto shutoff can simple be turn back on by pushing one of its function buttons. So I will have to look elsewhere for a new Multimeter.

Once you activate the backlight display on the EM721, does it stay on until you shut it off or does it automatically shut off after 1 minute like the older model DMM's with backlight display?

Disappointed in the EM721 the "beep" can barely be heard. Have to put your ear up to it to hear it. Some situations that I use it for doesnt allow me to see the display so I have to rely on the auditable tone.Is there volume control for it? Didnt notice anything in the manual about it.
