This represents a model of an x-ray spectrometer, with the laser pointer representing an x-ray, and the the structure in the center representing a bragg plane (connect 3 atoms in 2 dimensions) of a crystal, which deflects the x-ray onto a surface that detects x-rays. A computer then uses Bragg's law to make conclusions about the structure, specifically how far apart the atoms are, when both the x-ray wavelength and angle of deflection are known.
