Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol Z1 Walkthrough & Demo

This is my walkthrough of the new Traktor Kontrol Z1 controller and audio interface from Native Instruments.

It's designed to work seamlessly with both Traktor Pro 2.6.2, and Traktor DJ on the iPad and iPhone.

Where possible I've captured the screens on my devices to give you a proper close-up look at what's going on when you hook the Kontrol Z1 up to your software.

The Z1 is definitely a good piece of starter kit, although for a real beginner I'd suggest a small all-in-one controller like the Numark Mixtrack Pro. That would let you learn mixing the 'old fashioned' way, without relying on sync from the beginning. It's worth learning.

On a Mac or PC with Traktor Pro, there's nothing to stop you using whatever interface you like, and just using the Z1 purely as a controller.

Hey, great walkthrough, but are you saying there is no tempo control (to manually adjust BPM), and pitch bend to 'nudge' tracks when they go out of sync??? You sure about that???

There is no way to nudge each track into phase on the iOS app, either by pitch bending or phase adjustment.

You can tweak the beatgrids on the fly, but only to a fixed grid throughout the track; so if the track has a fluctuating tempo, you'll break the sync at some point in the track.

Obviously in Traktor Pro you have numerous ways to achieve that. ;)

I'm sure NI will add that in at some point. It makes no sense that they wouldn't. Still, both versions of the iOS app are free this week, so you should definitely pick them up, even if you don't use them right now.

I'm not sure exactly how you want to connect it all up, but keep in mind the Z1 doesn't have any inputs, so to use it properly with CDJs you'd probably want to use it alongside a regular mixer.

I have the z1, the Traktor software, and a bunch of cool remix ideas, but I just can't bring myself to work on them for more than an hour.... any tips for staying motivated?

really kool review... just one important question. if i plug my z1 to traktor scratch pro 2.5 and my cdj 2000 nexus with usb will they work ??? or turntables ???
