You might be looking for a katana for your Iaido training. Let’s see what an 8th Dan Iaido master’s real katana looks like.

Seki sensei has taken part in the All Japan Iaido Tournament 17 times, but he has always used this katana. He passed the 8th Dan exam with this katana too.

His 2.64 shaku katana was sold at an Iaido tournament, and it was the only one that fit into his hands perfectly.

By the way, he has another 2.6 shaku katana which he had a swordsmith make for him, which he uses for Tameshigiri mat cutting training.

What I love the most about this channel is Seki-Sensei's excitement to share with the world his knowledge on all these arts. You can see the pride from his smile demonstrating each technique, or showing off a beloved katana such as this.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. But I was under the impression that the average katana was roughly 2.4 shaku or around 28 inches.

I always thought these swords were deliberately shorter then larger tachi swords because more preference was placed on them being used for self-defence rather then dedicated battlefield weapons. (That's a big assumption on my part. please please please correct me if I'm wrong.) I figured that they were made deliberately shorter so that they could be easier to be drawn in iaido.

But, I do believe that 2.64 shaku translate to roughly 31.5 inches, right? Considerably larger then average I believe. Wouldn't larger swords be much harder to draw in Iadio? Is this the mark of a true Iaido master? Being able to draw larger swords with the same efficiency? Or have I misjudged the proper measurement somewhere in my math?

Again, I KNOW NOTHING. All assumptions on my part. Would love dedicated answers from people with experience though. I'd really love to know how a 3.5 / 4 inch defence translates into the art.

Dear Seki Sensei,
I am planning on buying a katana to train with.
Where is the ideal balance for a katana? Specifically, for Iaido and/or combat. Where is the balance located on your favorite katana? (how many cm from the tsuba)
Thanks!
