The Steepshot Coffee Maker: Worthwhile or Worthless? (HONEST REVIEW!)

The Steepshot promises that its use of pressure during brewing produces a better cup of coffee in less time.

But is the Steepshot the best coffee maker yet, an overpriced piece of junk, or somewhere in between? We took it for a test drive to find out!

Huh. In my experience, I've quite easily gotten great cups from it. I noticed that my Aeropress absorbs coffee odors quite easily after a week of travelling, and I've gotten much better, complex cups from the Steepshot. Like you said, it takes a bit of experimentation to get a tasty cup, though. This is my favorite travel brewer.

Edit: Yeah, that's definitely a mill grinder. No wonder you don't like the output. Get a decent burr grinder. I'm using a Timemore C2 and love my coffee with it.

I pour 200g right of water off the boil, seal, and wait 40 seconds. Aeropress grind.

Thanks for the review. Even though I was very excited about this product at first, and the total cost is less (about €75) here in Norway, I will definitely stick to the Aeropress for now. The important take-aways for me were:

- The recommended recipe might be great for some, but this comes down to personal preference. With the Aeropress you can adjust many parameters to find the perfect recipe for your own taste. Steepshot has less or no flexibilty when it comes to parameters such as temperature, pouring, stirring, pressing etc.
- It's really not faster or easier than Aeropress in my opinion. When making Aeropress pressing counts into the extraction, so skipping this part only reduces the extraction (assuming same temperature and grind). And making an Aeropress is just as easy once you have a recipe and a little practice.
- Four parts for the cap is a lot and I can imagine some of them wearing down or breaking. Time will show, but the Aeropress is almost unbreakable, so that's hard to beat.
- I usually throw the used grounds straight in the food waste bin (I can't have any food waste in the water pipes). Having to rinse the grounds off and then clean the sink would make the cleaning process more tedious for me.

However, I can imagine Steepshot being easier to use outdoors (when hiking etc) than the Aeropress, because it is closed and doesn't require a flat surface - in general, you avoid any spilling that might happen with the Aeropress.

If you had a burr grinder you might be able to try grinding finer and seeing if you can get a better extraction. I’d recommend the commandante c40.

Nice review. I was kind of excited about this, but it honestly sounds like I'll just stick with my Aeropress. Paper gives a full rich and clean cup, metal with corse grind for more texture. While cleaning isn't the most important thing, it's satisfying to just push that puck of grounds into the compost heap and rinse, unless I use a metal filter haha.

People: Pour overs are time consuming
Pour overs: can be ground and brewed in 3 minutes if you have a water tower or 5 if you heat water.

I've tried brewing over 4 minutes with the steep shot, it still retains that light color. This is not a product for the novice. It is quite interesting why it is so difficult to get a proper extraction out of this device that may help answer some important questions about brewing. But for now, it is really hard to say what that is.

The presenter claims the brew tastes burnt ... well of course it will, DO NOT USE BOILING WATER DUMMIES! Water should be no more than 90 degrees C when making coffee. Simple solution: buy a temperature controllable kettle.
However, this device will not create sufficient pressure at 90 degrees C. Only an espresso machine creates sufficient pressure to make good strength coffee inside a minute. This product will cost less than twenty euros to manufacture.
