TRANSCRIPT:
Nestled in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, is America’s largest private residence—Biltmore House, completed in 1895.

Before it became a National Historic Landmark and one of North Carolina's most popular destinations, it was simply "home" to the Vanderbilt family. After visiting Asheville in 1888, George W. Vanderbilt (grandson of famed entrepreneur, Cornelius "Commodore" Vanderbilt) was captivated by the area's natural beauty and began purchasing more than 120,000 acres to fulfill his vision of a self-sustaining country retreat. Designed by renowned architect, Richard Morris Hunt, the 250-room French Renaissance château is a true marvel of architecture and artistry and serves as a testament to America's Gilded Age. After 6 years of construction, George Vanderbilt officially opened Biltmore House to family and friends on Christmas Eve in 1895. Throughout the grand home, there are a total of 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, and 65 fireplaces, along with a full-sized swimming pool and bowling alley in the basement. The rooms are adorned with the Vanderbilt family's original collection of antiques, furnishings, fine art, centuries-old Flemish tapestries, and more.

Today, George Vanderbilt's descendants continue his mission to preserve this national treasure. Over 1 million guests each year enjoy the Vanderbilt legacy of hospitality on this incomparable estate.

I went there in August 2016, which is absolutely not the best time to go there. We were sweating the whole time. With that said, it's stunning. It's probably better to go in October though! The downside of that is that the gardens aren't in full bloom at that time, but I suspect the foliage makes up for it.
