Oasis Reunion: Why Now & Will It Last?

If you missed it, Oasis are back. Noel and Liam Gallagher appear to have buried the hatchet and reformed one of the UK's seminal bands for a tour in 2025. Tickets for said tour sold-out but not without controversy. Richard and Marina discuss the price-hike controversy and the possible reasons for the Gallagher brothers to get the band back together.

'Wolfs' starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt seems to be another flop from Apple. Why are one of the world's biggest companies still making movies?

Finally this week we get into toxic fandom. Singer / songwriter Chappell Roan released a statement expressing her discomfort at the level of attention some fans believe they are entitled to. This has caused a bigger conversation within not only her own fans, but in the wider entertainment world about the access fans have, or expect.

Ticketmaster is a cancer on the music industry.

So they announce they’re reforming less than six months before Noel can sell his publishing rights. This will probably inflate their Spotify numbers and therefore making it an even more attractive catalogue for a company to buy. Smart Noel, smart.

You know dynamic pricing is BS when it never ever ever drops the ticket price when there's low demand.

Interestingly, talking about Oasis’s album sales jump, What’s the Story Morning Glory was in the top twenty best selling albums in 2020 & 2021. They were still doing pretty well.

Also, nobody sells records anymore but both have had several number 1 albums recently (all of their releases were number 1), and Liam has just finished a UK tour which was a sell out. The fact that a new generation of fans are driving this just as much as forty years olds like me who crave the nostalgia (it’ll never be as good as watching them in the 90s and early 00s). My 20 year old son and about 15 of his mates went to see him, and most of the audience was his age (I felt incredibly old!!).

I think that’s great, tbh.

Between 20 and 40 I loved going to concerts and went to over 100. I haven’t been on holiday for 25 years but having a bunch of concerts a year made up for it.

Now I’m past 40 all the prices have almost doubled in the past 5 years, lots of my sort of bands have retired, scalping bots have made getting tickets difficult, lots of concerts are now cancelled a month out because of poor sales after you booked it a year ago, travel and parking is grief, everything is done on a phone app that barely works, and audiences have become far more unbearable as it’s more about showing off to your instagram followers instead of actually liking the music.

I’ve just sort of accepted that part of my life isn’t as important as it was and I could take it or leave it.

I remember being quite excited when it was announced Oasis were doing a concert close to where I lived in 2002. It was my first concert and I went with my older sister. I'm not sure who seemed less interested in them being there, Oasis or the crowd. It didn't stop the local paper when the reunion was announced waxing lyrical about the amazing concert they put on back then!

Totally agree about Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams being well worth the watch. I don’t know what it’s about, but I know that it’s not about what they thought it would be about when they commissioned it. I also know that it’s really very emotionally affecting and I admire the bravery and honesty of everyone involved.

Two brothers, both alike in dignity, at fair Wembley, where we lay our scene, from ancient grudge break to new mutiny…

Well, I'm a fan... bought a guitar back in 96 and learnt how to play Wonderwall - for my first ever song - Loved the first two albums and really wanted to love the third. Went down to HMV one August day in 97 and got it - I never bought another Oasis album after that - The feeling of Oasis is them being great in the atmosphere of the mid 1990s - the whole Britpop thing.... when the second album was all you could hear in pub dukeboxes - It's ok to want to celebrate not just that time but a time that will neve rbe again - As for the reunion - it would have been great if it were the original lineup and the brother actually made up.... instead of the inevitable thing of arriving separately and leaving sepratley and just starting and finishing the gig never to be seen again together.

What people don’t seem to recognize is that they ultimately have the power. Not only on tickets, but anything that is not a necessity such as basic and non-prestige food, shelter and clothing, if they refuse to pay ridiculous prices, then they can not charge them. There is a similar opportunity with Netflix right now telling them you are not willing to pay for commercials by simply canceling your subscription. Even on the basics, there is power such as limiting reliance on others by doing things like growing your own food.

on the Chappel statement: i totally agree with her.

people are always talking about online safety and all that- which is important don't get me wrong- but what about one's safety outside of the online world?
there are so many people who believe they have this right to claim ownership over their idols, while they really don't.

and some of those people are going REALLY far in their fantasy of "owning" the right to touch their idols, or even what they think that person should or shouldn't do, wear to even who they should or shouldn't date and whatnot.

for example right before Christmas 2023: Harry Styles had a haircut. and the internet exploded! people who started saying they hate him because he did that, and they didn't like it and bla bla.
but hello! it is his hair at the end of the day. if he wants something different, then by all means, go for it!

people really need to learn have respect for their idols,
and realise that at the end of it all, being in the entertainment industry is A JOB, it brings money to the bank, and food to the table.

that they are in the public eye, does NOT mean they ow you anything outside from what they already are giving: music, performances and all that kind of stuff.

but when at the end of the day the lights go off, and they get off stage, they just want to, like ANY other person in the world, go home, have some peace and quiet, and enjoy time with their loved ones, which NEWS FLASH!! we, as fans do NOT BELONG TO THAT CIRCLE, and we shouldn't either.

enjoy your fav artist's work, but be respectful of their lives outside of being an artist. they are not zoo animals, but only mere human beings like you and me.

I love that you flatly ignore that just a few days ago you were talking about how there will never be oasis again

The reason ticket prices are so expensive is because the bands and promoter agents know that demand will out strip supply so instead of letting scalpers make a lot of money, the bands & promoter essentially scalp the tickets to the fans direct and pocket the extra money …

There would be loads of things i would love for Ticketmaster to explain

Why they still let people queue if they know their are no tickets left ?

Why it often says “limited tickets available” or low availability when there are actually none.

Why the website has not improved over the umpteen years ….seems every time a big act puts tickets for sale it takes them by surprise…every single time.

Why have measures not been put in place that tickets cannot be resold straight away (hint….ticketmaster get a cut of the resale of the ticket)

How is Dynamic pricing fair ? .

Why if you get through the queue it cannot just say if tickets are available at other venues rather then having to queue again ?

How many tickets they have up that people can actually buy on presale and general sale ?

The big ones i want to know, how do ticketmaster leverage their monopoly against the artist and what the actual price set is dictated by the artist or Ticketmaster

Very supportive of Chapel Roans comments. However, her decision to cancel two legs of her European tour to attend an awards ceremony instead (citing a schedule clash) will draw further toxic/ vitriolic clashes with fans- some of whom will be genuine non - toxic, paying members who may feel a little bit used

the ticket agents have been ripping fans off for a long time, you only have to look at the "fan presales" where fan club members are typically given early access to tickets, on many occasions the fans have been given the worst seats in the house.

Remember those good old days when you qued for tickets at the box office you'd meet people in the que feel a kinship towards your fellow fans ..and the best feeling was collecting your tickets and looking at it ..the only issue was if you didn't have any money !! Its dead now and has the emptiness of streamed music.

I feel EXACTLY the same as Richard on this. I'm a 50 something man who loves their music as much as I did in the 90's. I don't buy into this tour hype and not bothered about the reunion. Everyone being taken for a ride

It's a status thing. A lot of people who have tickets probably don't know more than one or two Oasis songs. They're thinking of the bragging rights on instagram. The world we live in today.
