The biggest reason is that Strange needed Thanos to do the snap. Otherwise the Celestial in the Earth would have hatched and destroyed Earth completely. It was only by the sequence of events of where Iron Man sacrificed himself and Steve Rogers quit (due to time traveling) that the immortals changed their mind and worked together to stop the Celestial from being born and save Earth.

The 1st reason is bs, cos we can see in 1st "Doctor Strange" movie that stephen was reading book while sleeping. Which implies that he knew how to put out the soul from the body imo

In the original doctor strange movie when he faces dormamu in a time loop he is stuck there trying to complete it for an incredibly long time and he’s honing his skills in the process, so thinking he learnt to do that between infinity war and no way home is like saying he learnt it in a day after a full lifetime of training. I don't think that he didn't know the soul extraction technique, because in the first movie he was able to separate his own soul when he was reading books in Kathmandu, when he was fighting an ally of Kaisilius and when he had the last conversation with the ancient one .
