HEAD ABOVE WATER is a very messy album with so many great songs not living up to their potential. I had a lot of fun rearranging this!
I think the title was a good pick, as the song is a good representative of the album. To me, this record is about Avril’s struggle through disease, a toxic relationship, finding a healthy relationship but figuring out the most important thing in her life is and always will be her self.
I understand what they were going for with the album cover, but it feels kinda tacky tbh. I think that the cover they chose for the single “Head above water” is a lot better, but I’d go with a different font.
There were a few changes in the tracklist. I swapped “Dumb blonde” with “Break it so good (feat. Lauren Chrissy)” because I think it fits the tone of the album more. I added the amazing unreleased tracks “Bright” and “Lights out” and removed “Bigger wow” because they simply fit the album so much better (and are way better quality too). The track order remained pretty similar because I feel like it tells a story this way.
I put “Love me insane” as a deluxe track, mostly to make company to the unreleased song “In touch”, which is basically a sequel for “Souvenir” and deserves a place there. I added Fly too, even though technically it’s from the Avril Lavigne era, because it fits the theme of the album so well. I removed the version of “Head above water” with Travis Clark because no one cares about that lol, but I wish there was an acoustic version of it I could put here. I chose not to include covers this time (even though I adore “I want what I want”) because this is Avril’s story and hers only.
As for the singles, I tried to show all the sides of the album with that. I’d obviously start with “Head above water” to acknowledge the disease and her hiatus, then “I fell in love with the devil” for the toxic relationship. I would follow with “Souvenir” for the more romantic side of the album and to lift the spirits up a bit and show the album isn’t only ballads (not to mention I think it’s super radio-friendly). And then I would release another ballad as the last single (what can I do, they’re just so good in this album), and it would be “It was in me” because it sums up the whole album so well: she went through so much and looked in so many places, but it had always been inside her. Of course that with the whole COVID situation “Warriors” made a lot of sense so I would still release that.
