I'm glad you shed some light on what a producer's actual job is because a lot of so called, "producers" on the internet these days are just self-glorified beatmakers. While some are excellent at production and arrangement of the beat. They have no idea what to do to complete the song and bring it to market. Yet they truly believe they deserve 50% of the royalty despite not being present for the vocal recording, overdubs and re-recording of some instrumentation with actual hardware (because while the beat may be catchy, some of the synth leads and acoustic instrumentation lack the sonics necessary to go truly mainstream), mixing and then mastering.

After these steps, the record is generally taken through several other layers of marketing for promotion and collaboration...and these beatmakers aren't present for any of it. Yet still want to command the same 50% royalty fee that other "real" producers in the industry actually earn. Why do such producers earn 50% (and sometimes more)? Because they can often take a record through ALL of the stages mentioned above. They can even help secure funding for the record which often takes tens of thousands of dollars to promote (at least $10, 000 for decent results). In fact, some of the best mix engineers are producers and vice versa with decades of experience in the industry and have had a hand in the entire process. Some have even been artists themselves. I'm sure you can attest David!

Thanks again for this vid my dude.

Very interesting! I thought of myself to be an artists and a "producer" since I signed some artists, did their mixing, photos, videos, promo material and campaigns, made the plans for the releases and gave them advices, but like you just told, it's more the "creative director" not just a "producer"... Thanks for this interesting video!

Basically, creative director is everybody's boss and producer is their employee and the music boss :D!!!

A producer will also choose the right session players for a song, (if session musicians will be used), and will also often choose the engineer that they feel will best fit the song and the artist’s style.
A producer will also oversee the structural and musical arrangement of the song, including elements such as placements of bridges or solos, and will musically arrange parts for horns, strings, backing vocals, etc. This may include writing charts for studio musicians.
A producer will also oversee the budget of the recording project, which includes studio time, session players, additional personnel for arranging, as well as specialized equipment rental, transportation…even food, if the sessions are running long.
But the most important thing that a producer does, is to serve the song, and to make the artist(s) shine in the brightest light possible, through coaching and encouragement, and giving the artists a “safe place” to perform, so that they can tap into their emotions, their souls, without fear of judgement or ridicule… and, to assure them that “failure” is sometimes a part of pushing themselves to feel, and to try new things in their performances.
FWIW

Good topic we do need more understanding of that job description. And people need to realize the music they hear is PRODUCED HAS BEEN ALWAYS . ACTUALLY THE ENGINEER PRODUCER IS THE ARTIST AND THE BAND IS JUST COLORS AND BRUSHES

I think it's important to know a decent amount about mixing, even as just a producer/artist, in order to communicate more specifically how you want your productions to end up sounding to a professional mixing engineer.

aye david, can you talk about playlist order? Like for example - does it matter? (considering everything is already perfectly leveled) Should the bass be above or below drums, synths keys etc. Should vocals be placed below the instrumental when mixing or above? And then does this matter for order inside the mixer as well. Never heard anyone bring up this topic before.

You educate me time and time again. You have the perfect example with Bella. Without giving away your cut with her how much percentage does a typical producer get per song say if the song writer is the producer and the song is arranged and produced by the producer wouldn't help or she get 150% out of the 200%? And if the artist writes the song and the producer just produces the song is it a direct even split 100/100 ? I'm speaking on terms of how BMi puts it? Also what if your a musician that writes and recorded everything as far as a song or ep and there's a producer at the end overseeing but makes no changes she he or she really get 50% of the song or eps income? I've always wanted to know how you break that down cause I do everything myself and I'd hate to give up any of my percentages to something that didn't earn theirs?

Interesting video David. I produce my own music, and I've been offered a collab with a famous creative director who is also going to create the sound for the artist (me, in this case). He'll work on percentages, and no idea what a reasonable split would be. Any advice? Thank you so much. I respect your work so much all the time!

Hi, David! Great topics, as usual.
Would you recommend mono reverb sends for helping vocals (or any other element, for that matter) sound more spacious, with more depth? I found that using a short mono reverb (spring, in my case) with my other stereo reverbs sounded better than using only stereo reverbs (which, ironically, ended up sounding dry, and muddied the mix up).

I would like to know how a producer day looks like. Ie. daily routine, how do you split time between different activities

That's why I stopped recording other artist that wasn't on my team. Next thing you know you're doing producer and creative directing not just recording and mixing them. They want you to be emotionally involved and help steer the come creatively. I wouldn't.mind if people show appreciation but they act that's what you're supposed to do as a recording/mix engineer.... I was dealing with too many low end clients I think.

Wait, so a guy sitting in his bedroom copying and pasting loops is not a producer?

what is it called when you do all of that with 1 person? What would that title be

so every time i mix and master and arrange the vocals edit it put some effects making breaks in the beat etc. i should be called producer and not only mix and master by... ? thx you share my same thoughts... a beatmaker not involved in the song production shouldn't call himself a producer
