Thank you!!! Just began but been saying this for years. We have yet to do a deep scientific dive to the construct and rules to emotions. Emotions work like colors do.

13:40 I would say status instead of envy because I think it expresses its genetic origins. We have have the capacity to surpass it.

Emotions could be wrong, just like other ideas. One should not rule the other, if one aspires to be rational. Instead, one should investigate in a case by case basis, looking at the content, as opposed to following an unexplained principle of why one is *always* better than the other.

Emotion is a biochemical state, which triggers the memory.

If emotions are the body's gateway to the spirit...

Running into the fire to save a loved one is logic-driven, not emotion-driven. The logic is that the risk of losing a loved one far outweighs the risk of catching fire...losing a loved one may mean misery for the rest of our lives, guilt, etc. Getting a few burns here and there is a lot less important.

And that move, i.e. getting into the fire to save a loved one, strongly depends on the extend of the fire. If the fire is blazing, loved or not not, we won't go in there, period.

I’m a naive layman here but it seems to me this emotion/logic dichotomy is at best oversimplified, at worst spurious. I learned logic is all about internal consistency, you assume the premises are true and if that's the case the conclusion has to be true. So if your premise is that you don’t want another person to burn, you’d rather burn instead, logic dictates the conclusion. We can talk about rational self-interest in the classical Adam Smith sense vs behavioral economics but that seems to be something different from what you’re driving at.

I think Paul is conflating logic and understanding. Logic is a process to reach an understanding, but each person’s perspective of the same situation will inherently be different.
(My decision to enter the burning building is still born out of logic despite the decision being made quickly. Paul’s judgment on whether or not this a wise decision is his understanding.)

Emotion and logic are not a dichotomy, but two separate systems which complement eachother.
I agree with the overall premise of “emotion ruling logic”. Emotion is the older system which is designed to be reactionary and motivates us to do anything/everything.
Logic can temper emotion but cannot outright eliminate it & vice versa.

Emotion gave us a reason to live, logic evolved to help us (ideally) live better.

I bet this guy is a liberal. The issue with being emotionally driven is that emotions are in a state of flux consistently. This research is geared more toward females on average, as they are more emotionally driven. It also doesn’t sit right with academics who are led by the objective research, or anyone with a condition like bipolar or a narcissistic personality. There is a place for this, but it isn’t the whole answer.
