Which is the Best Waterproofing System for a Tub Shower

💥Waterproofing System Comparison💥

Its a question I get all the time, "Which is the best waterproofing method out there for a tile shower?"

It comes down to 3 main factors:

Availability (Can I pick it up now & get to work 😄)
Time of Installation (if you are a contractor, time is money)
Price/Budget

Foam board is no doubt the easiest & fastest system to install
Especially the sealant application type systems

Not all are price friendly though...
Kerdi board for instance can cost upwards of $80 a sheet!

Foam boards like WEDI can be quite costly too!

Hydro-Blok Foam Board is pretty much an identical type of product as WEDI

Readily available
Fast & Easy
For a tutorial on installing Go Board check out these sections of courses:

Most sealant application type systems can be installed easily in a couple of hours 👊

Another popular method is sheet membranes like Schluter Kerdi

This method becomes very cost effective if you use drywall as a backer board 👍

GURU Membrane is a very similar membrane product
Biggest issue about membrane application is the mess.....Its not a very fun method to apply

Then you can't forget about a traditional method with cement board 👍
This has been a method used for decades

Cement board is not waterproof on its own though
A liquid waterproofing must be applied to be waterproof
Ardex 8+9 is one of my favorite liquid membranes

Redgard is probably the most popular liquid membrane used over cement board
I would argue primarily for its availability

Fantastic video that not only goes over the options, but shows the install. Best video I’ve found thus far.

I've tried topical and kerdi membrane and foam boards I prefer foam board over them all because light weight and no dust cutting the board

if you use tiles in your bathroom, the best way is to have concrete walls for tile installation like they do in Europe. There is one company on Florida that manufactures bathrooms made of concrete and than they use a crane to place the ready bathroom in the home. Most of the standard building technologies in USA are not good (lumber, drywall used for bathrooms) than results in leaks mold, and other damage and after 20 years you have to remove everything and rebuild the bathrooms for another 20 years until it fails again.

If red guard seals, then couldn't you just paint it over any surface, such as regular drywall?

I always get this question around. If water goes into the surface of GoBoard, where the water can go? In the real world, water will leak into backer board sometimes, with Shower pan installed, how do we let the water out and prevent mold? thank you

I honestly charge more to do kerdi membrane over drywall because the product itself is not very cheap at all where I am and then adding the extra labour cost to install and the pain in the ass fee that accompanies installing it I’m either the same cost to do a tile backer board or cheaper to use backer board and once you factor in having to wait a day to start setting tile it really makes using backer board cheaper for the clients I work with. I use kerdi when the client is insistent on it but otherwise I am always using a backer board and sealant

I stopped adjust my methods because the client can’t afford them. There’s to many jobs out there and they can use someone else. I use to aquadefense everything until I used Wedi. Then I realized I was breathing that shit in all day. As far as the membranes go. I only use Wedi subliner dry with 620 because there’s an actual waterproof sealant used not just thinset that will definitely wick.

Budget comparison price would have been good.. My clients are starting to question my use of Prova board, Schluter, wedi, GO board.. Drywall with membrane or redguard being the cheapest..I would assume….They want the price est. Difference.. I’m talking from the ready state, ready for waterproofing.

I haven’t seen you install a tile redi system. Have you done any and what are you thoughts? They seem bulletproof where it counts.

My tile goes up from the tub, to 41". If I want to tile all the way to the ceiling, do I need to bust out the upper walls and apply insulation and cement board?

Is it possible to use red guard rolled on with the membrane.will they do well together

I am a diy and I have the time for drying
.. I am not putting tile up but wife wants the metal roofing as walls. so I am guessing I can use the redguard directly over the walls before putting up metal panels. I am installing a 72x72 guru pan and will membrane half way up wall from pan then red guard over that ...

Most people prefer the foam board for light weight and convenience, but that aside — which one is better? Foam boards or cements board with waterproofing membranes?
