Great point Jasmine. You’ll get a 1099-R still for the distribution and have to make sure you report it on your 1040 (8606) to avoid the tax and penalty. It’s on you or your accountant to claim the basis properly.

Also: the growth is not 'locked', you can access it and pull it out as well. It just has an additional 10% tax (often referred to as a penalty) on top of the normal capital gains tax.

you can also start withdrawing early if you retire early, you just have to commit to a withdrawal plan until you are 59.5 and have been withdrawing according to plan for 5 years.

The Roth is probably the best tax strategy law that ever came out of congress that is available to anyone with earned income. Form 8606 is the most important form nobody bothers to file. It's an absolute must if your making non deductible contributions to a traditional IRA.
