I Tried To Live With a 10 Year Old Phone. Here's What Happened.

I spent 24 hours trying to live with a phone launched in 2013. How hard can it be? That's what I intend to find out in my day-long experience of using the coveted Google Nexus 5 in 2024!

Just a 24hr challenge? You barely get used to the phone. Make it 5-10 days.
Try also to put custom roms that are more recent, with newer software etc.

I don't think this is how you should do it. This phone might be bricked by its software but it still has a pretty capable hardware. Just flash a newer version of Android on it, Lineage OS something, maybe android 12 or newer, and then we're talking.

Even without a custom rom, Firefox works on Android 5+. Why would you stick to a terrible old browser?

There are open source front ends for YouTube that will be vastly better than the app or browser for older phones.

There will be slightly older versions of keyboard apps with the keyboard swiping feature.

If you were going to use this phone as is, you would at least get these things fixed at least not just accept them.

You really didn't give that phone any chance, very unfair.
The latest version of firefox works all the way down to android 5, and even if you didn't wanted to use it for some reason you could have installed the apk for the last version of chrome that supported android 6 (version 106 from 2022) which is still out of date but way less out of date than the ancient chrome that ships with the system image. You could also just installed android system webview's apk that last supported android 6 toı improve apps that need it.
That phone is more usable than you allowed it be, even without using custom roms.
I was using a note 4 last year, switching between stock 6, custom rom 6 and an unofficial android 11 lineage build, it was usable.

Old phone challenge. This needs to be made a yearly thing for a while month. Some Gadget Guy [Juan Bagnel] & his community did it a few years ago. We should pick an old phone and go with it. It's fun and a bit of a detox from all of the non stop addiction ment people have.

Could have used a custom rom... Weird how it wasn't updated when you got it. I loved my Nexus 5! $350cdn for a flagship phone?

C'mon!

Also did you say that after having to manually install the update and the convoluted process with it, then in the next breath say that flashing lineage OS is out of the question for most

wrong way to do a challenge like this, why didn't you flash lineage on it? you'd have a much better experience.

nexus 5 is just such a beautiful phone, imagine it's design but with a modern hardware, especially screen dimensions

Hi, one suggestion for you for another vid, the iconic Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (circa 2014)...mine is still rocking. Thank you for your very original vids 🙏

One thing I missed was how light smart phones use to be but I remember that sometimes it felt like my phone wasn't in my pocket because it was so light

I remember having a Sony Xperia in 2013, it already had 4k recording and beast of a phone. I look back at it and think that not much has changed... i only use my phone for emails and YouTube though 😂

People here are talking about how he should have used a newer custom version of Android, but come on, he didn't even log into the play store and update anything, blud judged the entire phone based on using an 8 year old version of chrome in place of every app
Android 5 and 6 are still pretty useable, and so is 4.4 if you have some patience

Most Android emulators are build on Android 6.0 and it works just fine. Did you update system web view? Except for Amazon, I don't remember any app not working in 6.

phone manufacturers should bring the curvy design of google nexus 5 back. all phones of 2024 are rectangular with curved corners. google nexus 5 had gentle curves on top & bottom. how different did you find it compared to today's standard rectangular phones with curved corners?

This was the first phone I ever bought with the money I made at my first job, it was amazing back then, God I loved it, I miss those days 😢

Actually did this with my LG Stylo 4 a few months ago. Yeah, it's still a somewhat newer phone but compared to an S24+ it was something. I actually found the experience very fun and missed the notification LED on it.
