Why Becoming A Rescue Diver Sucks... (And Why it's Awesome) | Surface Interval

Most scuba divers progress up through the training ladder up to Rescue Diver, it’s probably the best course for you to undertake. It won’t let you dive any deeper, or go anywhere extra, it’s purely a course so that you can be a better scuba diver so that you and your dive group are all better. Now, I know I’m going to talk about the bad aspects of becoming a Rescue Diver, but I wouldn’t let this put you off because, and I know that everybody says this about Rescue, but it is the most rewarding course for you to take and I mean that.

Just finished my Rescue Diver course yesterday. A huge challenge, but very rewarding. So many mistakes made but definitely learn from it.

The key, mentally, is to go into any situation simply thinking, i'm going to do my best. What ever happens, whatever the outcome, that is all you could have done. With the benefit of hindsight it's very easy to say "oh yeah, i coul, d have done this or that instead" and those actions may have been better, but not only did you not have the benefit of hindsight at the time, you certainly have no way of knowing what the effect of different actions would actually be, because they were't actioned! So, do your best, and that's all you can ever do!

At one point many years ago I did my rescue diver and PSD course and was on a dive rescue team for years. You are pretty much spot on. I know this wasn’t a PSD video, but as gentle as you said if a person is involved in an event it basically sticks with you, you are correct and, in my opinion, you could drive that point home a bit harder. I left diving for many years and just got back to it. I am starting at the beginning although I could just do a re-cert. Even now after all these years, although I keep my mouth shut and the instructors and fellow students have no idea I was an active working PSD, I still am constantly watching and constantly back on alert. It does change your dive mindset.

I've been binge watching your content lately, it has been very helpful when researching gear and the process of becoming a diver in general! I think Rescue Diver is a course I'd aspire to complete one day. Cheers :)

Doing Rescue was challenging. I was't prepared enough, expecting a relaxing vacation week. But it was so worth it. Learned a lot about myself (how I act in stressful situations) and became a better diver (both for myself and others). Find a good instructor and do it!

Rescue Diver was the BEST and most enjoyable training I've been a part of. EAPs are a part of every dive now, something that I'd never thought of prior to this course. The situation we did to find a unconscious diver was great! I had the chance to bring that diver up from 40 feet of water and tow him back to the beach. It was some seriously good training and have a new found awareness of not only myself but other divers I dive with.

I'm preparing for my Rescue class and already thinking, "oh, i need to carry this and that". I'm already imagining myself in crisis situations. You're so right.

I was almost dying when I took a rescue course few days ago. It required all of my energy remained in my body to rescue panicing diver but is worth to be always.

My karate/jujitsu instructor was also my assistant dive instructor for my rescue diver course. Needless to say, I never want to rescue him again! However, it was my very next weekend of diving when I had use those new found skills to rescue myself from my own predicament after I burst an eardrum and was completely disoriented and started down the path to panicking. The skills one learns in that course are extremely valuable!

I loved the training right up there with tec training. I did loose my mask during it though, I did go back and look for it but with the viz being less than 1m it wasn't possible. I did love the search grid training scenario and panicking diver scenario, my instructor did not go easy on me with that one for sure. How often do you recommend a refresher on the whole course? I have done it twice in a 10yr span, not the CPR part we do that every year along with AED. It is a requirement of the Port Auth.

Found this video late but I finished my rescue course last week and while it was very challenging it was very eye opening 💯

I think any diver should make it a goal to take this course. Aside from diving applications these techniques will help in many on diving emergencies

The rescue towing was probably the hardest part. Trying to find the lost diver was the easiest because i had no chance anyways finding someone 50ft down with 3ft visibility lol but it was fun trying.

Pizza, Pizza, Pizza!!
My favourite course. On my Rescue course I had the instructor from hell, but after passing I realised I had learnt so much and evolved.
As a DM I've seen the bad (too soft) course where I don't think the student really learnt enough, and the good, where you see the student fundamentally change and become a better (more confident) diver.
Again, as a DM, I loved assisting this course. There is a slight sadistic side to your role, but, with a purpose and tempered to the individual (macho man - lets see!).
Demonstrating the skills for my AI really hammers home some of the finer points (yes I lost a weight belt and a mask which we recovered as part of a Search and Recovery).
