DONDA - Kanye West - Album Review

Donda is primarily a hip hop and gospel album, drawing elements from West's previous work, including progressive rap, pop and trap, as well as influences of boom bap, drill, electropop, hip house and industrial hip hop. It has been described as both "minimalist" and "maximalist" with a reduced presence of drums in the production, which was handled by West, BoogzDaBeast, E.Vax, Gesaffelstein, Jeff Bhasker, Mike Dean, among others. The album features vocal contributions from several artists and is darker in lyrical content than West's previous efforts, exploring various topics, such as religion, addiction, West's ego, his mental instability and relationships with his family, his divorce from Kim Kardashian, and his late mother Donda C. West, after whom the album is named.
Donda received mixed reviews from music critics upon release; many felt the album was overlong and lacking in coherence, though a few considered it to be superior to his previous albums Ye (2018) and Jesus is King (2019). The album also attracted controversy regarding the guest appearances by DaBaby and Marilyn Manson on the track "Jail, Pt. 2", due to their allegations of homophobia and abuse respectively. Donda debuted at number on on several charts, including the U.S. Billboard 200, where it became West's tenth consecutive number-one album in the country. It also marked one of the biggest opening-day streaming tallies in the history of Spotify and Apple Music. "Hurricane" was released as the album's lead single on September 3, 2021.

You did not just say there was “no incentive to finish” Off The Grid. I’m gonna ignore that you said that cause I like you.

I would love for you to make a video about the idea of consuming an album more than once to get the full experience. I hated IGOR my first listen, but after casually listening multiple times I found a new love for it.

Not enough people talking about how Come To Life might be the most beautiful song in his entire discography.

This album isnt "about his mom" it's about the numerous things he's done to try and recover from his grief over her loss. Its aimless because Kanye feels aimless without her

donda might be the most difficult album to get into kanye's music.

Kanye’s verse on Jesus Lord is so underrated imo

The Pop Smoke joint was the theme of the album. Tell the Vision was the perfect theme to pay his final tribute to his mum. The best way to pay tribute is to embrace the way forward. He acknowledged his dependency on God throughout the record. He's no longer lost without his mum, Donda would be proud of his son. Give the album another listen, Champ! I enjoyed your review though.

Donda dropped the weekend someone I cared deeply for separated from me to take care of their mental health after almost committing suicide. It was apparent this wasn't a perfect record on my first listen. However, the flawed nature of this album still spoke to me emotionally, it was all it needed to be at that moment of my life and it helped me greatly. The long tracks, the whole length of the album, the highs and the lows felt like Kanye was just on an odyssey to find something and I just related to it somehow. In short, I love this album.

considering the abrasive rebellion of Yeezus, the colorful eclecticness of Life of Pablo and the messy emotive minimalism of Ye and JIK, it's only your own fault if you went into Donda expecting a rich tightly-constructed cinematic album. And it's not an aimless album either, it has very clear themes of loss, uncertainty amidst Kanye's troubled marriage and forgiveness/redemption to name a few.

Where is Come to Life in your best tracks, that's probably the best solo track Kanye has ever made

Redux review? This album has honestly aged so amazingly, it’s actually made me nostalgic.

If there is one phrase to describe this album it would be, it’s a grower. Nearly every song at some point becomes your favourite song on the record and I find the whole project extremely intriguing.

I would love to know your thoughts now that it’s been a year. To say that Pure Souls, 24, Off the Grid and Come to Life go too long and get skipped halfway is honestly crazy as those are just straight up 4 of the top 10 best songs on the record and some of Kanye’s best songs to date.

I still don’t think it’s his best album ever… but it’s a really solid 8/8.5.. maybe even a 9? On some days I honestly consider it.

Would love to see it!
