Am I the only one who legitimately prefers the subcontrabass more? It sounds so massive and I just love the rumble and feel that it gives the mix great job again djent on man🤘

I think some are fine in unison (like Meshuggah's Demiurge) while some are preferred in octave only if it sounds right.

I'm still waiting to hear a test using guitar, bass AND subcontrabass in the same mix

All things considered, I felt the sub-contrabass notes really added body and foundation to the riffs. Unison sounded like it was lacking something to my ears.

I personally prefer the sound of unison, even tho they are playing the same notes as the guitars the frequency space a bass guitar occupies really make the guitars sound huge. Whereas going down another octave makes the whole mix just sound really muddy :/

Love that you had some Fear Factory in there. \m/

All of periphery’s eight string songs, including hell below at C#0

If it's heavy, octave below. If it's tight, unison.

unison sounded like a bass riff with distortion, octave felt like a "band" playing. i actually have an octave up pedal running my bass through a guitar amp with distortion, and i tune A0, so i dont need a guitarist.

I think my favorite bass tone when tuned down that low is JT's from Bermuda. Sounds way good at drop E. So heavy, but very clear.

Octave pedal and have both? Next test?

I prefer the sub contra bass, that seems to be the minority here though and I was thinking maybe because I listen to a lot of low tuned music and been playing bass for a considerable amount of time maybe the more exposure you have the easier it becomes to pick out tones that low ok the hearing spectrum

Unison works better on headphones but how would that sound in a good room? I'm still curious.

I like the octave below more. F sharp 0 is the lowest sounding string I would consider using. It sounds good. Unison is interesting but I find it to be lacking something in the low end.

I actually thought it depended on the song what worked better, for example I preferred Diamond Eyes and the FF track with the bass an Octave below the guitar, but Demiurge sounds better with the bass in unison. I also thought the Carnifex track would sound best with the Bass in unison if it was driven a bit

does the ear hear lower frequencies differently or more amplified perhaps when, for instance, your ears need to pop?

I really think it's all in context brotha!

Fear factory and deftones sounded fucking heavy with the octave below, but the others sounded ok with same octave
