The Big Picture: US-Iran Crisis

The United States was all set to carry out military strikes against Iran this week. American President Donald Trump himself tweeted to say that his military was “cocked & loaded”, prepared to hit three sites in the Islamic Republic, a move that would have potentially killed 150 people. Just 10 minutes before the strike was supposed to happen, Trump said, he decided to call off the operation. With tensions between the US and Iran running so high, many are wondering whether the US is going to repeat a tragic historical mistake a decade and a half after it bombed its way into a disastrous war against Iraq. It’s impossible to say for certain if there is going to be a war, but the events of the past few days have certainly increased the chances of some sort of conflict. On this edition of The Big Picture we will take a closer look at the crisis in West Asia

major supplier for India pass through this route(Iran, Iraq, Kuwait)
Qatar in this region also exports major lng reserves
usa base is situated here to protect this commercial route

escalating tensions between usa and Iran can have following impacts
1. oil prices escalating- affect oil dependant countries like India leading to inflation
2. Indias access to Central Asia is through the chabahar port in Iran- this can get affected
3. promote instability in the area- Iran closing the route can pave way for sea piracy
it can affect the population in west Asia due to possibility of war

challenges for india
1. India cannot afford to be anti usa due to nsg, afghan interests and Indo pacific region
2. iran is one of Indias largest supplier which provides oil at a discounted price

way ahead
India should develop alternate sources of energy such as fracking, acquiring stakes at other countries(e.g. Oman)
pressurise usa and iran to stop the cold war
India should devise an emigration crisis plan for its expats in west Asia
economic diplomacy should be the way forward and not solely military
