Welcome to The Infernal Brotherhood’s Willow series. Today we are going to answer the question, Who is Elora Danan? We’d like to invite you to subscribe to this channel for more Willow content, and like the video. This information is taken from The Willow Sourcebook, the film and hints at information from the sequel trilogy, Chronicles of the Shadow War.
We are first introduced to Elora Danan at birth, when her mother pleads for the nursemaid, Ethna, to smuggle her out of Nockmaar’s dungeons to safety. The introduction provides a bit of exposition about the prophecy. It stated that a child would be born that would bring about the downfall of Queen Bavmorda. This is expanded on in the Chronicles of the Shadow War, the sequel trilogy of novels based on the film. Elora is known by her birthmark on her arm, which signifies her as the daughter of the Sun and Moon, and future empress of all the kingdoms. The prophecy goes on to clarify that she will bring unity to the kingdoms of Tir Asleen, Galladorn, Nockmaar, and Cashmere. Each one of these disparate kingdoms and cultures share legends, oracles, and divinations to the same.
Elora Danan is not your average child. Not only is she the prophesied one, she shows magical awareness in her own right. When Ethna realised she couldn't outrun the Death Dogs any longer, she fashioned a makeshift reed crib to take Elora downstream. The river Freen has several turbulent rapids above the Nelwyn Village where she ended up. You could chock it up to luck, or see her arrival as a miracle. She is emotionally intuitive. She can tell if a person is good or evil, and reacts accordingly. When she is taken out of the river by Kiaya, Rannon and Mims, Elora knows she is in good, caring hands. Once she was held by Willow, she knew she had found her guardian. Willow reflects that "She looked at me, and I felt like I was part of everything
there is. Like I could face the worst of anything and win, if I only had confidence. And she gave me that confidence. I know it." When Willow was faced with the choice of giving Elora into Madmartigan’s care, he doubted that Madmartigan was a suitable guardian, but Elora showed favor toward Madmartigan with giggles and laughter.
Elora has other abilities as well. One of which is to communicate to those of great magical power. When she was stolen from Madmartigan by Franjean and Rool, and brought to the Fairy Forest, she told Cherlindrea that Willow was her chosen Guardian. When Willow was battling Queen Bavmorda it was Elora that gave him the idea to use the disappearing pig trick. Willow explains further: " I know my magic trick defeated Bavmorda," he says, "or at least confused her
so much she defeated herself. And I thought of doing the trick myself, I'm sure. But I don't know .... " I looked into Elora's eyes, just before the idea came to me. Have you seen those eyes? You can stare into them forever and never reach bottom-if you know what I mean. They're beautiful... Without her, I never could have done it."”
It’s fair to wonder if the prophecy was Elora bringing about the Queen's downfall or if Elora simply marshalled those around her who did it, but either way you read it, the Queen is dead, and for the moment, the kingdoms are free. The future would bring true strife to Elora Danan, challenging her to grow up faster than others her age, and she would outright reject her destiny for a long time, plunging the world into a darkness greater than Queen Bavmorda could dream. But that is an episode for another day.
