I love the silent and gentle dialogue between his words and the reactions of her face. Sublime.

Made me cry when I watched a VHS back in about 1985 and again 31 years later.

I’ve seen many many films in my life, I am what you can call a cinephile. I love films and especially I am attracted to the ones which have complex and deep dialogues. And believe me, I’ve seen some great films in that regard, films like Waking Life (2001), The Great Beauty (2013), My Night with Maude (1969) or the masterpieces of Ingmar Bergman, Alain Resnais and Krzysztof Kieslowski. But, for some reasons that I can’t fully understand, this monologue will be always profoundly stuck in the core of my mind. The heartbreaking pain in the words, the almost uncontrollable boiling emotions and bittersweet melancholy of love lost Stanton and Kinski are delivering here overwhelms me every time (and I’ve seen this many times, more than 10 for sure). Never have I witnessed such a deep and devastating sensibility and sorrow on film. This, my fellow cinephiles, is the monologue which ends all monologues.

3:20 That cut where he mentions the trailer is so simple yet so devastating. It's the moment when she first realizes she's talking to her husband. And the cut supports this, it's the first time we literally see things from her perspective, the shot of her isn't looking into the camera/Travis, the audio changes so Travis's voice is filtered via the telephone, and her reaction shots dominate the rest of the scene.
