Since the time of the gypsy moth's accidental introduction near Boston in the mid-1800's this insect has gradually expanded its range and repeatedly gone through episodes of massive outbreaks, causing defoliation over millions of acres of forest land. On May 20th, 2009 join Dr. Andrew Liebhold of the US Forest Service who will offer an Internet web conference presentation on "Gypsy Moth Ecology and Management in North America." Dr. Liebhold will describe the interface of the biology, management and forest interactions of this devastating alien forest insect. The gypsy moth serves as an excellent case study for examining both the ecology and societal reactions to invasive species; as the species expands its range into new areas the effects on both forests and people repeat themselves in a somewhat predictable fashion. Dr. Liebhold will draw from decades of his research and others on the dynamics of this interesting yet devastating pest. Original webinar delivers in May 2009.
