Royal Caribbean announced on March 1st that its newest ship, Odyssey of the Seas, will be sailing from Israel starting in May. As part of this announcement, the cruise line also indicated that these voyages will be fully vaccinated, with both crew and passengers needing to have the COVID-19 vaccine in order to sail. So, does this mean Royal Caribbean will be requiring vaccines to cruise in the U.S.? We have a huge cruise update that was just announced today.

This surprising Royal Caribbean update was then followed by a video update from Chairman Richard Fain. In this cruise news video update, Fain acknowledges that getting COVID-19 under control is essential to the resumption of cruising. Further, the executive acknowledges that the vaccine is perhaps the best step forward towards reaching that goal. What is the future of Royal Caribbean cruises in the U.S.?
Still, the cruise line has not made a decision yet on whether vaccines will be required here in the United States. To date, no major lines have made a vaccine requirement to cruise. So, this Royal Caribbean cruise news update was not as informative as we had originally hoped.
American Queen Steamboat Company and Victory Cruises were the first U.S. based cruise lines to indicate they will require cruisers to have a COVID-19 vaccine. The luxury cruise line, Crystal Cruises, has also recently made this announcement. Further, the British cruise line, Saga Cruises, has also made it a requirement.
In this latest Royal Caribbean update, the Chairman was hopeful that cruising could resume with a gradual roll-out of cruise ships as conditions improve and the health crisis is under control. While he would not commit either way as to whether the cruise line would require vaccines here in the U.S., we believe it is likely that the CDC could add this as part of its return to service requirements. Still, it is unsure if this cruise update will be announced anytime soon.
