Honestly, for a long time between Starbound and the last year I'd been largely unaware of how the Avali had spread in VRChat and to other platform and only stumbled upon it after I got a VR set and decided to poke my head into VRChat to see what all the fuss was about and almost immediately found Avali everywhere xD

As for lore, as you touched upon, 'evolved' is the right word. 2008 me was younger and dumber, and their original lore was a cliche mess. This led to some retcons to try smooth things out to make them more universally compatible with the RP community and the games they were trying to sedge into as the community branched out.

The rumours of a lore reboot aren't wrong, today I have a much clearer idea of what I'd like to do with them and have a much stronger understanding of worldbuilding, but at this point such a reboot feels like it'd undermine what other people have already built around and I'm hesitant to do that.


Nonetheless it's interesting to have an outside perspective of how people see them :3

I thought Avali were just another original species of the furry fandom but I see it has pretty big backgroud outside of it

I’ve always been so confused about The Avali. I first saw them in the Starbound workshop when the official release happened and was like “oh they look silly” but I eventually uninstalled it because I thought the buildings and weapons in the mod looked off in terms of the game’s art style (I assume because of how old the mod is now that I know this was around during the beta).

Next thing I know I look at the workshop again and see pages upon pages of add-one of people adding onto the Avali, and see that they have some of the most fan art in Starbound on par with Florans and Novakids and I’m like “hold up what is going on here?!”

I had no idea they were originally from Spore, another game I played a ton of as a kid, and from a galactic adventure I have also already played. Thats wild. Also now Im mad because The Avali were so close to getting the Novakid treatment! (Maybe that was for the best with how botched the Novakids were treated when they were added)

if you ever do make a followup video i recommend getting in contact with Hetuni (known as Farrem in some places) She is a close friend of Ryuujin and is generally regarded as the avali loremaster in most circles, she's usually happy to answer any questions on avali you have!

I actually barely recently (as in a few months ago) got into having an Avali as my avatar since one of my VR chat friends had an Avali avatar that was public and looked really cool. I cloned it and it's become my primary Avatar that I use in VR. The inside part for me is that I'm not even a furry so I never would have thought in my life that I would have something related to furries as my main Avatar in VR Chat, but I'm happy I got it.

great video! you for sure put a lot of effort and did a bunch of research to get this much info on the lore, especially all the details in starbound
i personally liked these species by an accident (bcus of a friend) and now i actively do avali art for people and hang around the community, hopefully i'll get to meet them in vr again hah
i think that the og lore for the species is super interesting, i'd get into it but it's kinda too complex for me to understand, i'd probs have to be dedicated to learn that many details about em

As a big fan of the Avali species since 2017, despite the holes of the lore not completely filled yet (All within due time), these birbs are the best thing that came to my life, I love them to death, from Starbound to VRChat <3

I have over 300 hours in Starbound but am just getting into mods, I looked up the Avali as there are loads of mods with that name in the workshop...I knew I've heard it somewhere and it hit me...Spore. I played a shitload of Spore back in the day, I probably have well over 2000 hours in that game. I've encountered them years ago, I never really thought much of them, I'm pretty sure I encountered them as zealots and ended up planet bustering them.

It is extremely satisfying to see a Spore creation transcend games, I really don't even think they're that special but the fact they literally made it into another game is crazy.
