Can #invisalign Cause Gum Recession?

Orthodontic movement, such as braces or Invisalign, can make you more susceptible to gum recession.

Conventional Ortho has greater capability to cause recession than Invisalign. Rapid movement of the teeth in the jaw bone is more likely to cause recession than slow/minor movement.
Other oral health risks

Invisalign braces have to be cleaned very often. If not properly taken care of, it can lead to Bad Breath.

Tooth Vitality: If you have experienced a previous injury to the teeth, there is a possibility that the Invisalign® treatment could damage or kill the nerves. If we find that there is damage to the nerve, we may recommend that you get an endodontic treatment like a root canal or restorative surgery first.

Crowns and fillings: Since Invisalign® covers the teeth with a tray that is designed to adjust the teeth, there is always a chance that fillings get dislodged, or a crown may become damaged.

Discomfort: Dental tenderness is very common with first-time users of. We advise patients to expect some scratching of the cheeks, gums, and lips. This discomfort will typically last a few days while you are getting used to having a foreign object in your mouth. Afterwards, you should feel comfortable during the rest of your treatment.

Root resorption: Invisalign® has to cause a cellular response in the roots of the teeth in order to let them move. On rare occasions, it is possible for the cellular response to damage the ends of the roots of the teeth. The teeth can also become damaged after the treatment if you lose gum support or gone due to a periodontal disease, and if there was root resorption during the treatment. Having your teeth cleaned at least twice a year while straightening your teeth, will help to prevent this from happening. If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment, please visit our website

Wild that gums can be moved like bunched up socks.

I had this happen to me, although to a lesser degree. Invisalign also caused an open posterior bite with my molars, in which case I had to follow the Invisalign treatment with an additional nine months of conventional braces to correct this.

I had terrible, barely salvageable gum and bone recession from 16 years of an oral piercing, a permanent retainer, and (to a much lesser degree) genetics. If you can believe it, much worse than this patient. My periodontist wasn't able to perform this method, and she had to do a large thick tissue gum graft. The procedure took 50% longer than usual because of the extent of work she needed to complete, and the first week or so was quite a challenge, but six weeks later I now have 6mm of thick, healthy gum tissue. She said in the coming months it will grow another 1mm on its own. The biggest plus is it saved me from losing my two bottom front teeth. I wish I could have had this procedure done, but unfortunately it wasn't the right intervention for my level of recession. Moral of the story: take care of your gums!!

So once you’ve pulled the gum down with the pinhole technique, how do you seal the gum back down ?

Happened on one of my lower front teeth, even tho I only got braces on my top teeth for overbite. I was a kid, and they did a gum graft that worked perfectly

Hi Joseph - I just had a pinhole surgery in the lower front tooth - but it was not successful as the gum is so thin in this part. Collagen was placed, but the gum has only risen about 0.5mm. The dentist could not pull it up any further. Are you sure you’d recommend this surgery in areas like the front lower teeth where gums are so thin?
