Also on Friday the 27th, another team went up to Nederland to help pull out a Silverado with a damaged transfer case. The truck lost four wheel drive about 300 yards from the end of the Caribou Trail #505 just west of town. In his attempts to self recover that long distance, the winch seized up and would operate any more.
This was a pretty straight forward kinetic rope recovery, we dug out the underside of the truck just to lessen the "stuck force" from ice and was on our way.
You shouldn't exceed about 5 MPH with a kinetic rope on the initial pulls to free the vehicle. When running the math on a 8500 pound truck traveling 5 MPH, it exerts over 7,000 pounds of force to the end of the rope. If you up that speed to 7 MPH, you are closing in on almost 20,000 pounds of force.
2 MPH more can be the difference between breaking rigging points and injuring people or damaging property, or a nice safe kinetic rope recovery.
