Specific latent heat - the energy required for a change of state for 1kg of a material.
During a change of state the temperature of a substance doesn't increase.
This is because the average kinetic energy of the particles doesn't increase. However, the internal energy does increase. The energy supplied to the substance goes to increasing the potential energy of the particles.
