Very sad indeed. The original phase 1 of Thamesmead provided unique architecture with generously sized flats with balconies on Binsey Walk and its environs. These could have been refurbished and improved. The decision was instead made to build high density high rise flats that can be found anywhere else in London, most of which will not be available to the tenants and owners that were displaced. Yet another story of 'regeneration' which is otherwise known as social cleansing. How many rented units were lost and will be replaced? What about the businesses? Affordable housing is mentioned - probably nowhere near the price paid for the leaseholders who were bought out. This is just a profiteering exercise by Peabody at the expense of the taxpayer, former leaseholders and tenants.
