King Charles III: A Year on the Throne

On 8th September 2022 the course of history took a turn. As the sun set on Queen Elizabeth II’s historic reign, the world looked on as a nation and a family embarked on a new era, the centre of which is one man. He was Prince Charles for all of his 73 years until, on that rainy autumn day, he became King.

After seven decades, this chapter was all he had been waiting for, but was it all that he expected? The year that followed was his chance to carve out his identity and his place in history.

It was a year of mourning, political turbulence, family feuds, a war in Europe. But it was also a year of celebration, friendship, cooperation and a look towards how the role of the monarchy would evolve in the 21st century.

Here, we take a look back on King Charles III’s defining year; what it meant for him, what it meant for Britain, what it meant for the world. And what it tells us about the future of his reign and the kind of King he is destined to be.

I think His Majesty is making his mother proud, just as Prince William & Princess Catherine are making the King proud. They are all stoic & graceful. The late Queen was a great role model.

My heart broke for Charles during that time. The pain and grief was so deeply etched in his And still, in the midst of his own personal and deep loss, he made time to circulate with members of the public and share in their own grief at the loss of a beloved Queen. I deeply miss HM Queen Elizabeth. She was truly the last bastion of standards. Getting up when you feel awful and pushing through. Accepting the realities of life. Being frugal (she always kept leftovers) and serving your country. Loyalty, Family, Kneeling to pray before bed each night, and doing what you must, even when you’re terrified.

It just appears to me those values are more or less extinct. It felt like the 20th century died with her and it hurts.

King Charles is an intelligent, reflective man who has had decades to contemplate the future of the monarchy and his role as king. The first days of his reign he was obviously grief stricken and under the media's cruel scrutiny of his every little gesture. He handled it all with grace, speaking directly about the Queen's passing to the UK, the Commonwealth and to the world from his heart. He will be a good monarch. He already is.

His Majesty as good as made a vow in his first address as King last year to carry on where is beloved Mother left off, and I must say his first year has certainly proven that to be true; I always used to be somewhat sceptical about what kind of king he'd be like, but since His mother's and our late Queen's passing he has lived up to his role very well, so I can and so say with genuine pride God save the King 😊
