The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the need for robust national and global planning, which relies on the innovative technologies and scientific solutions available. In our transforming global world knowledge in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) is foundational to a nation’s socioeconomic development and success. Translating research into products, processes, ideas and systems that improve life requires the skilled collaboration of all active members of our society.

In a country where STEM professionals are in short supply, and the youth are the first generation to pursue higher education in many households, inspiring interest in STEM requires greater understanding around the industries authority to shape our lives and the diverse opportunities for innovation available to them. To continue the legacy of Professor Maathai, and others who have led transformation, it is important that training in STEM is encouraged at primary, secondary and tertiary levels of education.
Women and girls in particular are challenged by intersectional forces of exclusion. This Women’s Month we aim to empower their participation in the knowledge economy through industry networks that build and invest in their progress.

This session we bring together South African women in STEM to: discuss the current trends transforming business and society; showcase the diverse roles they play within their sectors; highlight their impact and contributions; and discuss their motivations for nurturing a passion in STEM.
