I am one of that particular brand of lunatic who collects this kind of random information, even though I have never built a thing in my life!! New sub - great content! Stay safe, from Australia. 🇦🇺

I always though they were flat so u could make exactly 1/8" thick lines for boards or sheets that need to be cut. That way the lead thickness would exactly match standard kerf thickness

My dad was a bricklayer and had those pencils all over his truck. I never knew what the reason was for the irregular shape. Thank you for information. I hated when my dad asked me sharpen one, I would whittle halve off the pencil. When he would look at the stub, he would say don’t they teach you how to do it in school. Never talked back, 1960.

I use only Dixon “red and black” in soft, med. and hard. Superior to “giveaway” advertisement pencils. All are meant to be sharpened as a double edged knife. A diamond end view. Not a point. So I was taught 46 years ago. Worked out well.

Once again an informative video.
Just wondering, do ever watch the PBS show "This old house?"
I've watched it for years.

My dad always used his pencil to space between deck boards and fence boards. The point cant easily stab you either when its sharp. They dont break as easily either.

Another great video. Thank you! I forgot about my sensitive ears, so when you were scratching on the brick and shaving the carpenter's pencil, I had to turn the volume down. lol! Still learned a lot. 😀

I will never forget, back in high school in wood shop, I had a substitute teacher that day and I was using a carpenters pencil and the teacher asked me what kind of pencil is that. And that's no joke. And no, it wasn't a woman substitute teacher.
