English:
John Coolidge Adams (Worcester, Massachusetts, February 15, 1947) is an American classical music composer and conductor, one of the best known and most often performed in his country. His creativity spans a wide range of media: orchestral works, operas, dance music, music for videos and films, as well as electronic and instrumental works. Some of his early compositions, such as Shaker Loops (1978), Harmonium (1981), Harmonielehre (1985), and The Chairman Dances (1985), are among the best known and most frequently performed in contemporary American music. In these works he took minimalism to a new and fresh terrain, characterized by luminous sounds and a strong and theatrical approach to musical forms.
He studied clarinet with his father and later with Felix Viscuglia, clarinetist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. At age ten he began taking composition and music theory lessons, then he played in a marching band, and at fourteen he already led the community orchestra with a composition of his own.
In 2006, John Adams was a composer-in-residence at Carnegie Hall, and continues an active life as a conductor, appearing with the world's leading orchestras and with programs combining his own work with other composers ranging from Debussy, Stravinsky, Bartok and Ravel, Zappa, Ives, Reich, Glass and Ellington.
The work and life of John Adams has starred in three documentaries.

Of the piece:
Shaker Loops began as a piece called 'Wavemaker' in which Adams attempted to emulate the effect of rippling bodies of water in his music. The piece was a commercial failure, but Adams kept the idea of repeating loops of oscillations on stringed instruments. I title the piece 'Shaker Loops,' because of the 'trembling' of the strings as they oscillate between the notes and Adams' inspiration in the Shakers dance to energetic and repetitive music.

John Adams is wonderful. Many years ago, while playing with the Youth Orchestra in Cleveland, he came out to conduct The Chairman Dances with us. He was warm and very friendly.

23:37-24:20 is so satisfying. Arriving on that chord at 24:11 feels so good.

I like the point in the third movement where the notes converge into a continuous tone

John, as we all know, is a talented, intelligent composer, but I find that his music addresses my brain more than my heart. The high energy level of the first movement was more to my liking when I was young but now it seems to go on much too long (10 minutes). The second movement is an interesting experiment that just misses the mark. This only my opinion so you can call me crazy and enjoy to your hearts content. The third movement sounds like stuff I used to compose back in the 1970s: minimal in too many ways.

In Adams always a limpid quality. Even in dissonant and jagged sections a limpid and a yielding quality, hopeful and charged with serene electricity, like a drop of water. What is contained in that limpidity and grace? Is it faith, hope, even religion? Certainly religious feeling. It contains the sound of something immanent, 'about to be', something of the frisson of that, ethereal, quiet and gracious.

I used to like this 30 years ago when I was a teenager. But I can't stand it any more.
