Volta45 (Bernard Johnson-Tackie) is a London-based record collector, a highly sought-after DJ, writer and radio show host. He is the main instigator at The Goldenstool Project He has produced a 5 part podcast documenting the history of Highlife music from 1920 to the present - with an appearance on WordWide FM. The podcast was recently featured in Songlines Magazine. He has collaborated with various bands and record labels, notably SoundwayRecords(Konkoma), Kalita Records, Yaaba Funk, and Fofoula to name but a few.

For this special episode, Volta45 presents the first-ever comprehensive mix of Burger Highlife - this special sub-genre of HighLife Music was birthed after political turmoil and military rule in Ghana between 1979 & 1981, which led to nationwide dusk to dawn curfew. The nightlife was totally obliterated. There was a mass exodus of musicians to Europe most of them resettled primarily in Berlin and Dusseldorf. The new they sound created with some forward-thinking German producers was an irresistible dancefloor ready fusion of Disco, Techno & House and Highlife music driven by the latest technology of the day which was the drum machine. Presented here are 10 tracks from some very rare records that tell throw more light on this under-reported part of Ghana's rich musical history.

As a Ghanaian born and raised in the states, I was only exposed to a little bit of Ghanaian disco and funk as a child. I don't recognize any of these songs but the beats and the rhythms are so familar. Thank you for putting together this mix, the nostalgia has filled my office today :)
